Laurie van Zyl: Oncology pharmacist
“Being a pharmacist in an oncology context allows you to use technical, scientific and medicinal knowledge to help cancer patients,” said Laurie van Zyl.
An oncology pharmacist is responsible for each cancer patient's medication and treatment needs. It entails operating under sterile aseptic settings to create and reconstitute chemotherapy regimens. It also entails calculating doses and ensuring that medicines are manufactured in accordance with their specific specifications.
Oncology pharmacists spend a lot of time doing administrative duties, such as negotiating with medical aid funds.
“My suggestion to young Namibian pharmacists is to gain practical experience in oncology pharmacy settings. Oncology is a relatively unknown topic, and the only way to get expertise in this field is by real hands-on experience.
“I picked this career since it tests and develops many aspects and skills of being a chemist. It regrettably deals with death pretty frequently, but that is what makes it so fulfilling, travelling a unique journey with each patient and supporting them through each stage of therapy,” he said.
