Ride-hailing driver: Donald Handura

Michaiyla Hansen
After being retrenched from Namib Dairies, Donald Handura embarked on a new career as a ride-hailing driver for Indriver.

Faced with the challenge of unemployment, Handura took money out of his savings to buy a car, transforming his circumstances into an opportunity.

He believes that this job, while not ideal, is better than nothing and offers him a way to earn a solid income.

The economic landscape has been tough, and Handura emphasises the importance of finding ways to generate income rather than staying at home.

Positive outlook

His proactive approach has not only provided him with a livelihood but also instilled in him a sense of purpose and resilience.

He enjoys the flexibility and independence that come with being a ride-hailing driver and the opportunity to meet new people.

Handura views each ride as an opportunity, not just to earn money but to network and connect with potential employers.

He remains positive and professional, even when dealing with unruly customers, understanding that maintaining a good attitude is crucial in any service-orientated job.

His interactions with passengers are driven by the belief that any one of them could be a stepping stone to a better opportunity in the future.

One of his wishes is for the Indriver app to improve by allowing drivers to see their distance from a customer before accepting the ride-hail request.

This feature would help drivers manage their time more efficiently and avoid unnecessary trips, ultimately enhancing the overall experience for both drivers and customers, he said.

Despite these challenges, however, he said: "I find joy in this new role."

He appreciates the stories and experiences shared by his passengers, noting that these interactions enrich his daily routine.

His adaptability and positive outlook have turned a difficult situation into a productive and potentially prosperous venture.
