Unsung hero: Solar installer

Boris Hendricks

A solar installer, also known as a solar panel installer or photovoltaic (PV) installer, is a qualified specialist who installs solar energy systems on residential, commercial or industrial buildings. Boris Hendricks was introduced to renewable energy technology while working as an electrical general intern at Namport in 2018. This experience sparked his curiosity about energy consumption and how to harness the potential of renewable energy technologies.

Hendricks completed a solar technology training course at Young Africa Namibia in Okahandja. A five-month course focusing on the installation and maintenance of PV systems and solar water heaters (SWH). He has worked on a wide range of solar projects throughout Namibia, from modest home systems to huge industrial installations. His most significant project was a 400 kw grid-tied system in Windhoek's Wernhil Park.

Hendricks advised: "Don't be afraid of heights; be innovative in order to succeed in the solar trade."
