When it comes to hospitality, nowhere in Namibia does it better than the coast. Locals and foreigners alike are spoiled for choice when seeking out some of the most incredible food and beverage options the country has to offer.
And with all this going on, you know you’re good when you consistently garner among the best the reviews in such an important market.
Godenfang Urban Farm and Kitchen in Walvis Bay has cemented itself as a must-visit venue where the food, friendly service and an upmarket yet relaxed ambience make for an unrivalled culinary experience - every time.
Co-owner Lindi Dreyer offers some insight into their recipe for success.
“Our driving force has always been to offer visitors to our restaurant something they will not get anywhere else in Walvis Bay. From our decor to our menu, it’s just something different.
“We like to say 'step out of Walvis Bay for a moment and into our world',” she added.
And what a world it is!
Set in a home built in 1930, Godenfang blends quaint comfort with a clean aesthetic that is welcoming and invigorating to the senses.
“What we hope people feel when they enter the restaurant is a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Because the building used to be a house, we want people to make themselves at home. The interior is cozy and warm, while our outdoor seating has a European café-like charm, and because of all the plants and flowers, the burst of colour brightens the dullest days,” Dreyer explained.
Ravenous reviews
A quick online search could quickly turn into a hours of scrolling, feasting your eyes and imagination on the adoring reviews that describe how divine Godenfang’s dining experience is. One reviewer even went as far as saying: “Went there for dinner on our first night in Walvis Bay, and didn’t hesitate to go back the following evening”.
“Our menu is fairly small, focusing on ingredients that are fresh and in season. It’s more intimate than a larger restaurant. We focus on quality over quantity.
"We grow plenty of our own vegetables and herbs, and incorporate those into our dishes. We also offer thin crust wood fired pizzas, and use our pizza oven for preparing a variety of our menu items," Dreyer said.
“Our signature, however, is called 'Overnight Pot'. Taking large cuts of meat, like a brisket or pork shoulder or leg of lamb, we cook it literally overnight in the residual heat from the wood fired oven. Then we use this meat as the basis for the meal. Mostly, the result is epic!” she added.
Besides their amazing a la carte offering, the team at Godenfang also regularly hosts themed nights and various specials to give their clientele new and exciting experiences.
“The thing to look out for at Godenfang is our specials and dessert boards. These are constantly changing. The specials are sure to incorporate something from our garden and all our desserts are homemade.
“So, please do make a point of following us on our social media platforms to keep abreast of our daily specials and activities,” she added.
Brilliance must also show resilience
Though recent years have not been very hospitable to those in the hospitality space, the team at Godenfang is confident that their passion, panache and personal touch will help them weather the storm and allow them to continue to live out their dream of bringing something distinct to both local and visiting diners.
“Not going to lie, 2020 and 2021 were no fun, not for anyone in hospitality. These years were extremely humbling, and taught us to become innovative. We grew thicker skins and eventually learnt to roll with the punches," Dreyer said.
“Since August last year there has been a slow and steady increase in the flow of traffic, and we’re grateful to still have the opportunity to continue doing what we love to do.
“Not everyone is cut out to work in the restaurant industry, one really needs to have a passion for it. And that we do," she proudly added.
“We’re in the business of making people happy, that’s what makes our world go round."
