A bus full of travellers stops in front of the Avani Windhoek Hotel and Casino in the city centre of the capital.

The travellers are tired from a long flight, but they perk up immediately at the smell of coffee that greets them at the door.

“We have the best cappuccino at the Pantry,” boasts general manager Rudi Putter. “I enjoy the Pantry. It changes atmosphere throughout the day; it’s simply wonderful.”

Keeping up with the new

As one of the oldest hotels in the capital, the property was constructed in the 1970s and officially opened on 1 March 1975. The casino was added in 1995. Back then, the property was known as the Kalahari Sands Hotel and Casino. It was acquired by Minor International in 2015.

“This change was important to keep up with modern trends,” Putter said, adding that 15 years ago the property was showing its age. According to him, a lot of effort was put into upgrading the facilities.

“We have made revolutionary changes to the outdoors,” he said, referring to the peculiar arrival experience of having to walk through the entire shopping mall and up an escalator to enter the foyer of the hotel. “It really wasn’t ideal, and moving the entrance down to the street makes for a better arrival experience.”

Avani now boasts parking that can be accessed directly from Independence Avenue, along with a bus stop, making it more convenient for travellers to check in. It boasts 173 bedrooms, including a presidential suite and four superior luxury suites. “All our rooms are fully air-conditioned, and all en-suites boast a bath and shower.”

Full buffet of perks

Guests can enjoy Wi-Fi and the full premium DStv bouquet, perfect for relaxing after a hard day of work or play.

For more entertainment, there are a variety of restaurants to choose from, including the Pantry, Stratos, and Dunes Restaurant, where live performances or DJs create a lively ambience.

The casino also offers a premium experience for the gambler. To make sure everyone continues with their fitness routine, Avani Fit also offers a gym where guests can work up a sweat.

While they do cater to families, it would ideally be for shorter stays.

Being in the city centre, Avani focuses on travellers from abroad and business people.

“We’ve developed six business rooms, which are ideal for somebody who wants to be accommodated but also be able to work. The room offers a really nice couch, a work area together with a printer and scanner combination, and off course a coffee station,” Putter said. Avani offers it whether you want to work, play, or stay.
