Boxa Properties: Revolutionising construction

Environmentally-friendly alternatives
At the heart of the company's philosophy lies the fusion of high-tech construction elements and a dedication to reducing its ecological impact.

In an exclusive interview with Angus Fleming, director and head of the installation department at Boxa Properties, My.Na Properties uncovered a ground-breaking approach to construction that prioritises environmental sustainability.

Boxa, a South African-based design company, has spearheaded a new movement in the industry with its commitment to creating rapid-built, modular buildings that embrace eco-friendliness at every stage.

At the heart of Boxa’s philosophy lies the fusion of high-tech construction elements and a dedication to reducing its ecological impact.

By minimising the use of cement and concrete on-site, Boxa ensures that its buildings have a significantly smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional construction methods.

Instead, it emphasises sustainable practices and strives to conserve water during the building process.

Zero waste, minimal disruption

Fleming said Boxa’s approach involves meticulous pre-design and off-site manufacturing. The company's factory in Johannesburg serves as a hub to construct its modular structures, which are then transported to the intended locations.

This method allows for zero waste and minimal disruption to the environment during installation. Even in ecologically sensitive areas, Boxa can seamlessly erect structures without compromising the natural surroundings or requiring extensive digging for foundations.

Ordering a Boxa property is a straightforward process facilitated through the company’s user-friendly website, boxa.space. The website showcases a range of standard products, each accompanied by prices to give potential clients an idea of the cost per unit.

While logistics are not included in the initial price, Boxa collaborates closely with clients to finalise the design and accommodate specific requirements. Thanks to the efficient manufacturing process, which takes approximately eight to 10 weeks, and swift on-site installation lasting around a week, clients can witness their visions materialise in a remarkably short timeframe.

Environmental advantages

Fleming emphasised the environmental advantages of Boxa’s buildings, highlighting their innovative use of cross-laminated timber structures.

These timber-based constructions act as carbon sinks, effectively capturing and storing carbon dioxide, thereby mitigating the negative effects of greenhouse gas emissions.

The combination of eco-friendly materials and the company’s efficient building practices not only benefits the environment, but also enables clients to start their operations or move into their homes sooner.

The versatility of Boxa's approach is particularly noteworthy in the educational sector.

Fleming proudly mentioned that schools can have fully functional classrooms constructed within a week. This rapid deployment of educational facilities allows for swift response to growing learner populations and immediate improvement of learning environments.

Bespoke requests

While keeping a modular and standardised approach, Boxa also caters to bespoke requests. For clients seeking unique architectural solutions, a team of experts provides tailored designs and comprehensive consultations. Although the customisation process may involve additional costs due to the intricacies of the design work, the end result guarantees a one-of-a-kind product that meets the client's specific needs.

While currently based in Johannesburg, their expansion into Namibia may be on the horizon, depending on demand and project opportunities.

Boxa represents a paradigm shift in the construction industry, challenging conventional methods with their environmentally-friendly alternatives. By combining sustainable practices, rapid construction timelines and modular design principles, it has positioned itself as a pioneer of a greener future.
