Chart of the Week

This week’s Cirrus Chart of the Week looks at NamPower’s energy mix.

NamPower significantly reduced its reliance on energy imports from South Africa’s Eskom in recent years, contributing only 10.9% of energy fed into the system in 2023, down from 41.3% in 2018.

NamPower’s mix of energy sources changed drastically last year.

With strong water flow at the Ruacana Hydro Power Station and larger contributions from independent power producers (IPPs), locally produced energy made up 41.8% of units fed into the system in 2023, up from 26.7% in 2018.

NamPower plans to invest N$18.9 billion for additional generation and transmission capacity over the next five years, targeting that 70% of energy consumed to be generated locally by 2028 and 30% from renewable sources by 2030. Reliance on imports from Eskom is close to eliminated, with energy imports now mainly sourced from Zesco in Zambia.

Sufficient supply is available in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) market for any potential short-falls, according to Cirrus’ Adrian Gläser.
