First in-car Wi-Fi service in Nam launched
MTC, Netstar and Standard Bank team up
The blue brands band together to bring broadband to your buggy.
Telecommunications giant MTC joined forces with Netstar Namibia and Standard Bank Namibia to launch Namibia’s first ever in-car Wi-Fi and vehicle tracking service on vehicles purchased through the bank.
As of Monday, 22 August, vehicles can be fitted with an in-car Wi-Fi unit with 10GB or 30GB of data included as part of a Netstar subscription you can top up, and which comes with a host of connectivity features and benefits.
According to MTC’s chief commercial officer Melvin Angula, “the importance of telematics and telecommunications in tomorrow’s vehicles cannot be overstated”.
“Consumers are increasingly becoming aware of how connected technologies can enhance their lives and our task as a forward-thinking organisation is to evolve in tandem with market expectations.
“In a fast-moving world where people live on the go, the need to continually keep connected is essential, and the introduction of the connected car Wi-Fi service is an exciting offering which is innovatively leveraging technology to enhance the experience of the motor tech industry.”
Unlocking new value
Through its subsidiary, Netstar designed and developed the bespoke technology platform with Internet of Things aspects such as in-car Wi-Fi, telematics and fleet management. Netstar Namibia general manager Marizel Jacobs said: “At Netstar, with everything we do, we love to continually deliver new insights, with the aim to unlock new value and opportunities - from productivity efficiencies, cost savings and technical innovation for the future of automobile.
“This initiative is a first in Namibia, and it is seen as being invaluable to the automotive industry, ranging from company fleet management, automotive tracking, tourist establishments, large enterprise users such as government fleets, rental fleets, emergency response fleets and private vehicles.
“The units will be fitted at Netstar Namibia service centre, and arrangements can also be made for fitments outside Windhoek.”
Dynamic user experience
Also celebrating the partnership, chief human capital, corporate affairs and marketing officer at MTC, Tim Ekandjo, said: “This partnership is a key part of MTC’s new drive towards digitalisation and our Internet of Things strategy. Cars of today will need to be connected to provide a dynamic user experience. We are witnessing an increasing number of car buyers ranking in-car technology as important as vehicle performance.
“They want their cars to be safe, efficient, better equipped and fun. By connecting people to platforms that will manage the complexity of streaming music from the cloud, real-time traffic information and personalised roadside assistance, we can meet these growing demands,” he said.
“We are therefore excited and proud to have partnered with Netstar Namibia in revolutionising customers’ in-car experience. We are deliberate in our quest to continue being the leader of smart partnerships with fellow industry leaders to keep up with technology and bring new concepts and services to Namibia.”
