The artistry behind TH Humble Beginnings

Transforming ideas into inviting spaces
Michelline Nawatises
Founder of TH Humble Beginnings, Thamia Hougaard, has built a reputation for her unique approach to interior design, combining creativity with a personal touch. In a recent interview, Hougaard shared the story behind her business, which began in 2015 with a passion for transforming spaces. “I have always had a creative mind, and I felt it was time to use my talents,” Hougaard said, recalling how she registered TH Humble Beginnings and began offering interior design services. She said what started as a small team has now grown into a successful business, providing custom curtains, upholstery and full-scale builds.

Hougaard emphasised that her work goes beyond just providing design services. “It’s very personal. I assess each client’s style and personality, especially for private clients, and work from there to create something unique and lasting,” she explained.

High-quality fabrics

TH Humble Beginnings sources fabrics from top suppliers, including Hertex, Loomcraft, and Silk House. “I only use high-quality fabrics that I believe in. It’s important to provide products that are durable and tailored to each project’s needs,” she said. Hougaard described her process for selecting projects as instinctive, noting that she can often envision a design immediately upon entering a space. However, she ensures that the final decision is always in the client’s hands. “It’s about making the client happy with something timeless and cost-effective,” she added.

Memorable projects

Reflecting on her most memorable projects, Hougaard highlighted a backpacker’s lodge where her team built everything from the ground up using unconventional materials like galvanised pipes. She also recalled the emotional responses from private clients, particularly when one client shed tears of happiness upon seeing the final design. Despite trends in the interior design industry, Hougaard remains focused on delivering designs that suit her clients’ styles. “I don’t follow trends. My priority is to create designs that are personal and timeless,” she said. Hougaard also stressed the importance of lighting in creating the right ambience for a room. “Lighting is crucial, but it’s not just about natural light. There are many ways to enhance light in a room, whether through mirrors, decorative elements or plants,” she explained. With 25 years of experience in the industry, Hougaard continues to lead TH Humble Beginnings with the same passion and attention to detail that has earned her business a stellar reputation. “It’s a blessing to see the impact my work has on people and their spaces,” she said.

Studio operations

Hougaard detailed her studio’s operations and her hands-on approach to interior design and production. The team handles everything from custom-built furniture to upholstery and curtains, with a separate workshop for curtaining. She emphasised teamwork and craftsmanship, using industrial machines for production while maintaining a hands-on, old-school approach. She also shared the importance of personalising designs to meet client needs and noted the value of practical experience over formal qualifications in the industry.
