Ügür on visit to Namibia

David Naluwe
Karim Ügür (24) partnered up with the Namibian-German company Afritalk to come to Namibia to learn more about Namibia's colonisation by Germany, and Namibia's history in general.

He was sent to one of the best schools in the country, Hage G. Geingob High School, located in the famous city of Windhoek. He had only arrived two days after he landed in Namibia, so l instantly took up the opportunity to be his friend. Upon his arrival, he and some other German nationals were warmly greeted with a cultural greeting from the grade 11s, a spontaneous performance indeed.

Once he settled in, I took the liberty of having an interview with him to get to know him a little better and to hear more on why he came to Namibia's beautiful land. It was a brief interview, so I tried getting as much information as possible. He said: “Namibia is full of magnificence - from its history to its tourist attractions and landscape, but that is not why I'm here. I'm here to find out more on how Germany colonised such a gem of a country and how things and education are different from that of Germany's own".

He didn't spend much time at Hage G. Geingob High School as he wanted to see the rest of Windhoek. After two weeks, it was time to say goodbye as he was leaving back to Germany. Most of the learners were sad, some crying. The grade 11s and Karim had a long prayer before his flight. He left us with some words of wisdom: "Don't think just because of your ethnicity your opportunities are limited, that’s why we say have big dreams".
