Khomas capacity-building project

The Khomas regional council’s education, arts and culture directorate celebrated international literacy day on 28 September at the UN Plaza in Windhoek under the theme "Transforming Literacy Learning spaces".

Adult Learners' Week forms part of an international lifelong learning advocacy campaign endorsed by the United Nations and celebrated in over 160 member states. Over the past four decades, the international community has repeatedly pledged its support for literacy.

International adult learners was launched in 2000 in Hanover, Germany.

The aim of the week is to facilitate environments that are conducive to learning and that consider adult learning as a right and a tool for equitable and sustainable development. National activities that reach out to marginalised populations are already carried out in some 40 countries worldwide.

Certificates were handed out to the participants who attended different types of training for three months, including bead making, tailoring, biscuit making, and entrepreneurship training under the project called Khomas Capacity Building Project, which is run by the Khomas directorate.

More than 40 participants enrolled in the programmes.

"We have skills development programmes for our adult learners and community members at large."

Councillor for John Pandeni constituency, John Mwoonde, said at the event that adult education plays an important and unique role in helping people adapt to a constantly changing world and instilling a stronger sense of responsibility in adults.

"Mankind is now in the 21st century where drastic changes are taking place in all the spheres of social life and these changes demand ever-growing changes in education."

He further added that more learning opportunities must be created to help people cope with social and economic development, and the quality of adult learning should improve so that they can learn what they want.

"Adult education must be reformed so that more diversified learning opportunities will be available within an open space."
