Yoken Mason Swartz, popularly known as YMZ, is a multi-talented artist who has risen to fame in Namibia through his exceptional skills as a dancer, DJ and music producer.

YMZ's journey to fame began in 2016, when he first stepped into the world of dance. His catchy moves and unforgettable performances quickly gained attention, and he found himself uploading captivating content on Instagram.

In no time, YMZ's dancing became the talk of the town, and he found himself engaging in dance-offs with other talented Namibian artists. Additionally, he had the opportunity to showcase his talents in various music videos, further elevating his profile as a dancer.

Music production

As fate would have it, 2020 brought an unexpected twist to YMZ's career. With the global lockdown, YMZ decided to channel his creative energy in a different direction. Embracing the challenges presented by the pandemic, he ventured into music production. "During lockdown in 2020, I started making beats and became a producer that same year. I released my first single, 'Askies,' which now has over 24 000 views on YouTube and more than 1 000 plays on Spotify," he stated.

Stepping into the DJ booth

Determined to expand his talent even further, YMZ made a decision in 2022 to pursue a journey to become a DJ.

Enrolling in DJ lessons, he gained skills and seized his first opportunity to perform at a local spot in Windhoek.

For YMZ, music has always been at the heart of his aspirations. Flexible working hours, the chance to have off days, and the thrill of constantly adapting to an ever-changing industry are some of the factors that excite him in his role as a DJ. But it's the ability to make a difference in people's lives, be it through energising a party, lifting someone's mood, or creating unforgettable memories at an event, that truly drives his passion.

Challenges

As with any artist, YMZ faces his share of challenges as a DJ. Reading the crowd, a skill often underestimated, poses a significant challenge. While some may perceive DJ'ing as a breeze, YMZ understands the importance of gauging the audience's response to his music and the responsibility of keeping the energy levels high throughout his entire performance.

The creative process

YMZ's creative process is divided into four key stages. It all starts with preparation – gathering inspiration and materials. Then comes the incubation period, where ideas simmer and interconnect in his mind. Illumination follows as insights from the depths of his consciousness come to the surface unexpectedly, even in the most unexpected moments. Finally, verification occurs when the vision takes shape, with lyrics and ideas materialising into fully formed creations.

Achievements and aspirations

YMZ's hard work and talent have not gone unnoticed. As a dancer, he achieved a significant milestone by being listed among the top five dancers in Namibia in 2020. As a DJ, he had the honour of closing for the renowned DJ Zinhle in May of this year at The Loft.

Moreover, YMZ proudly collaborated with esteemed producers and vocalists from South Africa, including Atin, Arrie Cakes, and Siya, showcasing the depth of his capabilities and opening doors for other local artists to collaborate with international talents.

A word for aspiring DJs

For aspiring DJs, YMZ emphasises the value of professionalism. "Reliability is key; never let a venue or promoter down, and always show up on time," he stressed. However, amidst the seriousness of the craft, he advocates having fun and not taking oneself too seriously. "After all, passion and joy lie at the heart of any successful pursuit," he said.

YMZ's journey from a talented dancer to a skilled DJ and music producer serves as an inspiring story of determination, adaptability, and passion. With each step he takes in his artistic career, YMZ continues to make a mark on the entertainment industry.
