Unam, MH Greeff enhance educational experiences

MH Greeff Primary School and the University of Namibia's (Unam) Khomasdal campus have established a strategic collaboration, driven by a mutual interest in fostering educational partnerships. This objective alliance seeks to provide valuable learning opportunities for Unam's English language education students.

Guided by lecturer Jacolynn van Wyk, Unam students have actively participated in various activities at MH Greeff Primary School. These engagements include classroom observations and guest lectures, allowing students to gain practical insights from experienced primary school teachers.

First-year students focused on understanding the dynamics of classrooms, observing the interactions between teachers and young learners. According to Van Wyk, the primary goal of this visit was to comprehend the daily rhythms of a classroom setting.

Second-year students, emphasising listening and speaking skills, conducted phonics classes at MH Greeff. The students appreciated the holistic approach employed by the teachers, leading to insightful discussions on instructional methods.

Taking a creative approach, third-year students crafted story sacks for grade one learners, aiming to enrich both the learners and themselves by refining their teaching methodologies through interactive sessions.

The collaboration involved third- and fourth-year students gaining valuable insights into classroom management from MH Greeff educators Elsandra Skrywer and Eva-Ndatitangi Dumeni, along with American English fellow Christine Masolo. Van Wyk observed the students transitioning into pupils, absorbing knowledge from experienced teachers during this insightful phase.

Special recognition is extended to George Kandetu, the principal of MH Greeff, and Skrywer, its head of department, for their open-door policy, which facilitates Unam student-teachers' continuous exposure to real-world classroom scenarios.

The Unam early childhood education and care department views this collaborative relationship as integral to their teaching philosophy, emphasising the importance of hands-on experiences for their students. The collaboration underscores the power of partnership, effectively bridging the gap between academic theories and their practical applications.
