Creating lasting memories for Namibians
A business that understands Namibians' financial constraints
By offering shared travel options, Travel With Tatekulu ensures that costs are kept low, making it accessible for locals.
Registered in 2023, Travel With Tatekulu is a business that understands the financial constraints Namibians face when it comes to travelling.
Co-founder Jona Ambuga said his business makes use of a unique approach to address the specific needs of the Namibian market. This, he said, is what sets the business apart from other travel providers.
Services offered by Travel with Tatekulu include day tours over various routes, providing unique and memorable experiences for clients. The business also accommodates private individual bookings, ensuring personalised and exclusive adventures.
Ambuga's roles are centered on various aspects of the business.
“I handle day-to-day activities such as managing bookings, overseeing advertising efforts and taking care of administrative tasks to ensure smooth operations and the success of the travel venture,” he said.
His business partner, Benjamin Shigwedha, takes on most of the driving and procurement responsibilities within the business. Together, the duo manage Travel With Tatekulu, each handling specific aspects to ensure its success.
Tourism industry
Ambuga said the tourism industry in Namibia presents both opportunities and challenges. He added that while the market is not highly lucrative due to limited disposable income and a relatively small local population resulting in repeat clientele, finding a niche can lead to success.
“The industry faces competition from travellers seeking experiences outside Namibia, but Travel With Tatekulu focuses on catering to the local market, making it a priority. International visitors are seen as a bonus. With careful research and a unique approach, the business can thrive by providing tailored and localised experiences, ensuring its success within the Namibian tourism landscape,” he said.
As business partners, Ambuga and Shigwedha empower each other by understanding each other's strengths and weaknesses. They've created a work environment where they complement each other's skills and keep the atmosphere light-hearted with some jokes, but remain serious about their goals.
Open communication and trust are considered crucial for success for their business as they strive to uphold the best principles, which makes their journey in business smooth and enjoyable, they said.
Goals
Ambuga highlighted that one of the business’ goals is to become the preferred travelling partner for Namibians. The team has a strategy focusing on understanding their unique needs and offering affordable and diverse travel experiences to both local and international destinations.
Additionally, by establishing strong local connections, providing exceptional customer service and showcasing the beauty of Namibia, they aim to penetrate the tourism industry and create lasting memories for Namibians as their trusted travel companion.
“As we expand, we would be thrilled to introduce car rental services, providing more flexibility to our customers. We are excited to venture into international routes beyond Africa, offering great opportunities for globetrotters,” Ambuga said.
