Creatively telling stories

Producer and acting executive producer at the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Anna Muzinda’s journey started off when she joined the company as an intern. Later, she became a freelancer and eventually moved up to now being a permanent employee. She is responsible for managing a small creative team.

Muzinda said the company is always growing and, as an employee, the role transitions she has observed in the past 11 years speak to the endless career possibilities at NBC.

“I believe that each role I have taken on within the company helped me build onto my knowledge of the entire organisation, and how it operates,” she said.

Existing relationships are one of her biggest considerations, which make it easier to set and achieve goals. She said while going back to school, the company entrusted her with flexibility and helped her balance both academics and work. Muzinda added that the company culture and people she works with are an epic blend of corporate and a connected community.

In her role, understanding duties and taking into account the needs of others is vital, taking into account that it is not just about the job or position. “It involves more than just supervising projects, people or clients. You are expected to perform the role of a leader and involves communicating a vision of success and enabling an environment for the coworkers to do their best work while inspiring others to achieve their full potential,” she said.



Education

Muzinda is currently in her final year, pursuing a diploma in media studies from the University of Namibia (Unam). She also studied television production at the College of the Arts, where she majored as a producer and video editor.

In addition, Muzinda holds a diploma in secretariat and office administration from the Rundu Vocational Training Centre. Along the way, she enrolled in short courses to upskill herself in areas relevant to her job, which she considers one of her greatest investments.

Looking back, one of her notable accomplishments during her career was spearheading a team project which developed a comprehensive audio-visual campaign to promote the achievements of a local town’s municipality.

As the team leader, she coordinated efforts, delegated tasks and ensured the timely completion of project milestones. “We successfully created a compelling marketing strategy, including TV, radio and social media campaigns. Thereafter, we received positive feedback from the stakeholders, which resulted in a significant increase in awareness. It was incredibly rewarding to witness the impact of our work and the difference it made to the public,” she said.

The best part about her job is being able to create, Muzinda shared. Using the gift of creativity combined with the skills of telling stories that sell and create change is her motivation.

To the young person reading about her job and career journey, she said: “The amount of work you put in is the same amount of reward you get back. There are days when things are great, and there are days that are very challenging - as with any job. Show genuine passion for the industry, adopt an ‘I can do it’ attitude and don’t be afraid to voice your ideas,” she said.
