Gideon: An individual of diverse pursuits

Hofni Gideon, who identifies as a young man with diverse pursuits, is from the vibrant Ongwediva.

From first to 10th grade, he attended Charles Anderson School. He went on to Gabriel Taapopi Secondary School for grades 11 and 12.

"I had initially enrolled at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) in an InStem course, but later had a change of heart, but it became clear that this path wasn't aligned with my personal interests," Gideon explained.

"Later, I made the bold decision to transfer to the University of Namibia (Unam) to pursue my genuine interest, computer science. I graduated in 2021, a huge feat in my academic career."



Pursuits

Beyond his professional life, he said he is a person with broad interests. He is an ardent traveller who is always looking for new perspectives and cultural encounters.

"I'm deeply rooted in agriculture and farming, nurturing the land and cultivating crops as both a livelihood and a source of profound fulfillment."

Furthermore, as a digital creator, he uses social media to curate and disseminate information that appeals to a large audience. His ability to organise events allows him to bring people together in various settings, from personal meetings to huge community festivities.

"Entrepreneurship has played an important role in my life. Last year, I took the risky step of creating IG Pub & Bistro, which sadly had to close its doors in February," he explained. Despite its end, the experience was invaluable and loaded with insights that have shaped his life to this day, he added.

Gideon and his father run a farm market in their town, supplying fresh food and local goods, contributing to the local economy, and building relationships with their neighbours.

"I am a multifaceted individual who has explored various avenues in life, from academia to entrepreneurship, travel to farming."

Searchforhofni CC, a sole proprietorship, was established in 2019 and offers its clients a variety of services, with a particular focus on IT assistance and solutions.

The company provides the following services: IT support, network solutions, cybersecurity services, and construction services.

According to Gideon, Namibia confronts technological challenges due to reasons such as poor infrastructure, inequities in digital access and a lack of education in technology disciplines. Economic restraints, outmoded legislation and limited access to money all play a role. "Government actions and market size both have an impact. Addressing these concerns is critical for closing the technical gap and promoting technological growth in Namibia," he said.

Like any other entrepreneur, he has faced difficulties.

"As a CEO, I face challenges in decision-making, managing uncertainty, leading a team, remaining competitive, financial management, compliance, stakeholder relations, and maintaining work-life balance. To address these obstacles, I prioritise transparency, adaptability, good communication and strategic planning. I also spend time developing a good team, being informed, and supporting self-care. The combination of these tactics contributes to the company's success and long-term growth."

According to him, in Africa, cybersecurity threats encompass a range of challenges, including phishing, ransomware, malware, DDoS attacks, insider threats, data breaches, and a lack of cybersecurity awareness.

Addressing these threats requires increased cybersecurity awareness, strong regulations and collaboration across borders to protect against cybercrime.

Cybersecurity is crucial for safeguarding sensitive data, ensuring national security, maintaining business continuity, preserving privacy and upholding trust in the digital environment, he said. "It also helps prevent cybercrime and supports economic growth."

And, among other things, that is what his company prioritises.

Gideon concluded by suggesting how many of these inconsistencies might be solved, adding that African governments are focusing on efforts such as expanding infrastructure, promoting digital skills, changing rules and fostering collaborations. "International collaboration and technological innovation are critical in tackling these difficulties and furthering ICT development in Africa," he said.
