Making waves in radio
Award-nominated radio presenter at Fresh FM, Delila Katanga, with a degree in communications, is a force to be reckoned with in the radio industry. She has a captivating voice that demands the listener's attention.
With her family as the driving force in her life, Katanga said that they are her biggest critics and biggest cheerleaders. She considers herself a go-getter who is gleeful, multifaceted and zealous. She started her career as a radio presenter in 2018, working for NUST FM, where she fell in love with radio and made a decision to better her craft.
Katanga started working for one of Namibia’s most prominent radio stations, Fresh FM, in July last year.
She is loving the experience.
"The shift from community to commercial radio was major, and I continue to enjoy the learning experience. The opportunities are endless and Fresh FM has become home."
She added that it was the best career move she could have hoped to make after completing university.
Working at Fresh FM has opened many doors for the young presenter.
She highlighted a recent trip to South Africa, during which she interviewed the musician, Sho Madjozi. She said she relates to artists and is passionate about music.
Every small step matters
She has learned several lessons so far in her career, including not to be too hard on herself. She advises young people to be open to new opportunities and encourages them to appreciate every small step as it is vital for where they want to go.
"A detour doesn’t mean you won’t get there; it just means you will get there another way," she said.
Achievements
The young radio presenter has managed to accomplish many things with her ambition and love for her work.
She has a passion for writing, which drove her to publish two fictional novels, 'Uncalled' and a limited sequel in 2019.
In addition to her novels, she also bought her first car at the age of 20 and says it is due to her financial discipline, which she learned from her mom. Katanga has been nominated twice for the SimplyYou magazine awards in the category of best female radio presenter.
"Such a nomination tells me that people see and love what I do," she said.
Be daring
Katanga encourages young people who aspire to be in the radio industry to get out of their comfort zone and to go out and network.
She stressed that opportunities won't always meet you at the doorstep.
The radio presenter added that one should be teachable and open to criticism.
"You need to condition your mind to deal with criticism because people will always have something negative to point out, especially when you are in the spotlight," Katanga said.
