A Border Crossing with a Difference

Sendelingsdrift Pont
Chloe Durr
Crossing the border between Namibia and South Africa at the point known as Sendelingsdrift, implies that you will be crossing the mighty Orange River with a pontoon. It has to be one of the most relaxed and entertaining border experiences a person can have. After a short wait at the immigration offices and a subsequent radio call to the pontoon operator, you will enjoy a blissful glide across the flowing Orange River. Vehicle in tow, one is guided by the impressive six-ton pontoon, which is attached to an overhead cable for added security. Friendly staff and a beautiful environment help to make crossing this border point a stress-free experience.
Be sure to call ahead in flood season to ensure that the border is in fact open for crossings, and don’t miss the 4pm closing time of the border office, which is found roughly 25 kilometers south of Rosh Pinah. Accommodation is found on the southern and northern river banks, which form part of the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Trans-Frontier Park.
