Responsible Tourism Awards 2020

Wiebke Schmidt
In cooperation with the organization Eco Awards Namibia, Namibia Media Holdings has for many years determined those Namibian establishments that meet the criteria, which clearly defines them as a responsible tourism operator.

No matter whether involved in the hospitality sector or as tour operator, Namibian establishments have long embraced the idea of sustainable tourism, and thus they manage their operations according to eco-friendly principles, committing towards selective and careful use of resources, by promoting the concept of Reducing, Recycling and Reusing - known as the three R’s.

It comes naturally that environmental care and sustainable practices for the future of the immediate environment, contribute towards the company’s profitability as well as its people’s wellness. Participants of the Responsible Tourism Award-program are gauged in terms of their innovativeness under the categories conservation, water, guiding and the managing of the facility, while this year - in line with the theme of the Namibia Tourism Expo - much emphasis is placed on energy, especially renewable energy.

In namibia it is becoming increasingly difficult to determine a winner, as so many entities have started embracing sustainable and responsible tourism.

The winners of 2019 were:

Winner amongst Accommodation Establishments: Wolwedans - Runners-up: Wilderness Safaris Desert Rhino Camp & Gondwana Kalahari Anib Lodge

Winner amongst Tour Operations: Pack Safari - Runners-up: Sense of Africa & Wild Dog Safaris

The winners of 2018 were:

Winner amongst Accommodation Establishments: Gondwana Namib Desert Lodge - Runners-up: Grootberg Lodge; Wilderness Safaris Damaraland Camp;

Winner amongst Tour Operations: Ultimate Safaris - Runners-up: Abenteuer Afrika Safaris & Wild Dog Safaris

Her we present the winner and the runner-ups for 2020. Under the unique circumstances brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided not to select a winner amongst tour operators during this year’s NTE.
