The energetic imprint of flowers
Edward Bach, a medical doctor and homeopath, created Bach flower remedies in the early 1900s for emotional problems and pain.
Henriette Lamprecht – Made out of watered-down extracts from the flowers of wild plants, Bach flower remedies are an alternative or complementary treatment that is used for emotional problems and pain.
There are two theories considered for this therapy, explains Dr Penehafo Haitamba-Shinduwe. Theory one is that the flower remedies work by subtly changing the energy or vibration of the person. In theory two, the flower essences trigger neurotransmitters that affect emotions.
According to Haitamba-Shinduwe, the idea behind Bach flower remedies is similar to homeopathy. However, fewer materials are used and the therapy doesn't work directly on physical symptoms, targeting emotions instead.
“Homeopathy is the belief that the body can cure itself. It uses small amounts of natural substances like plants and minerals to treat the body or mind,” says Haitamba-Shinduwe.
Bach believed that healing negative emotions can help the body heal itself. His system contains 38 remedies that each address a specific negative emotion. These emotions are grouped into seven broad psychological causes of illness: fear, uncertainty, lack of interest in present circumstances, loneliness, oversensitivity to influences and ideas, sadness or despair as well as caring for others at the expense of oneself.
Haitambe-Shinduwe explains flower essence therapy is used to help balance negative emotions with a positive emotional state.
“It can help someone who suffers from panic, fear or anxiety and is usually noticeable after 2-3 weeks.”
Explaining the difference between essential oils and essence, she says flower essences are odourless, don't contain plant material, and are made to be ingested.
“The flower essence is extracted with water and believed to contain the energetic imprint of the flowers. The intent is to address emotional symptoms, not physical.”
Essential oils are applied topically or inhaled. They are extremely potent and therefore may need to be diluted with a carrier oil and are used for physical healing.
Flower essences are meant to restore emotional balance before physical ailments appear, says Haitamba-Shinduwe.
As an example, she describes certain remedies associated with fear as an emotion. The first is aspen, which is used to change the negative state of fear of the unknown, anxiety, and apprehension without a cause to a positive state of inner peace, security and fearlessness. Cherry plum is used to create inner balance and the ability to think and act rationally out of a negative state of desperation, fear of losing control of the mind and being on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
