The Mysterious Hoba Meteorite
A trip to the North would not be complete without a visit to the famous Hoba Meteorite, 25km off the main road to Grootfontein. The largest known iron-content meteorite on earth, estimated to be between 200 and 400 million years old, is a 60 metric-ton mass made up of 82% iron, 16% nickel and traces of cobalt. It impacted earth about 80 000 years ago and is a national monument of Namibia.
Malleable in texture, metallic in sound and cool to the touch, this out-of-space mass truly is a “Hoba” – the Khoekhoegowab word meaning "gift" – to Namibia, adding further intrigue to this already geologically rich land.
