Tourismus on wheels

Customised adventures

Pam Kruger, KTE Namibia and Windhoek Day Tours owner; “The client buys the car, or truck, and comes to us for the conversions.”

Namibia’s excellent road network makes self-drive holidays an attractive option for many visitors to the country, and leaving Hosea Kutako international airport in command, and behind the wheel, of a customised vehicle, with a vast new country spread out and waiting to be explored, can be exhilarating.
However, getting to the desired area is often not enough and many tourists want to go right up to the very muddy edge of the waterhole where the wild animals, indigenous to Namibia, frolic. For that, a guide driving a well-equipped game viewing vehicle can provide an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience to be shared with friends and family.

Serious adventurers know that the vehicle can make the journey pleasant and transform any commute into a mini-holiday for those who love the untamed outdoors of Namibia. When it comes to 4x4 vehicle customisation, and more and more specialisation in game viewer conversions, few names in Namibia ring true like KTE Namibia.

KTE is a custom steel and body works company in Windhoek. “We specialise in tourist vehicle conversions. Other products include truck and trailor conversions, game viewing vehicles and customised 4x4s. All products can be customised to unique specifications. We offer excellent service, quality workmanship and reasonably priced service plans,” reads their website.

Led by husband-and-wife team Nic and Pam Kruger, the business has been growing since 2013 and currently employs 15 skilled workers who know what to do with steel. According to Pam much of the custom designed and build modifications are made from locally sourced steel using their CNC cutters and other specialised machinery to achieve the most perfect finishes. “The client buys the car, or truck, and comes to us for the conversions. There are standard plans which Nic modifies depending on the number of seats and accessories, like a toolbox for instance,” she says.

Of course a toolbox is not the most imaginative customisation one could ask for, but practical considerations take precedence, as more and more demand for game viewer conversions dominate the business. All types of 4x4 vehicles are brought for the team’s attention including design, parts manufacture and installation of the modifications. They custom build a range of customised 4x4 vehicles including canopies, hunting vehicles and even funeral vehicles. Overlanders are built to outlast the rest while customised trucks are safe, strong, practical and built for Namibian roads.

Pam is particularly committed to Namibian tourism and has put in-house designed tall gameviewing vehicles to work offering day tours through the capital. Windhoek Day Tours (windhoekdaytours.com) offers a two and a half hour guided tour through the city, with the option of breakfast or lunch at Urban Camp. According to Pam clients love to hear the history of the city and particularly enjoy the township tours with the opportunity to sample exotic local flavours like kapana. “It is very popular,” she says.
