Tourist of the Year-2020

Wiebke Schmidt
This year is different in every conceivable manner. The COVID-19-pandemic has taught us to think differently and do things differently - the word “normal” seems to have become an obsolete word. But the Tourismus Namibia team thrives on being different! That is exactly what we keep doing as we continue to bring you new ideas and promote Namibia and all its DIFFERENT facets.

So it should not surprise you that we have come up with the new idea of finding the Tourist of the Year-2020. The competition is designed to not only promote local tourism, but to make you part of our exciting world, where we visit Namibia’s closest as well as most remote sites, all in search of finding destinations, which allow all of us to choose a niche holiday idea.

Previously we introduced the idea to you and as part of it we launched the project “Namibia, my Gem”, which we are sure you would have witnessed, if you follow the live broadcast of Tourismus Namibia each Saturday morning. The five sponsors, Gondwana Namibia Collection, Journeys Namibia, N/a'an ku sê, Namibia Wildlife Resorts and O&L Leisure have in the meantime each been allocated one of the final five candidates (out of more than 70 entrants, who submitted video-clips of previous holiday experiences) and we are now in the starting blocks to have them visit their destinations and telling us more about them.

They will film and broadcast their experiences - including their travels, which will be made possible by Vivo Energy, the Shell fuel provider - and visitors of this year’s Tourism Expo Namibia will elect the “Tourist of the Year-2020”. The NTE-2020 will be held from the 4th to the 7th of November 2020 and visitors will apart from the live visits to the various establishments also be able to watch the recorded experiences of these five candidates: Heike Gebauer, Sulet Gous, Tina Haulyondjama, Helvi Nestor and Klaus Rennack. The group photo was taken at the final launch of the “Namibia, my Gem” project.
