50 Khomas girls on SA tour
Highlight on school netball calendar
The Khomas netball committee has sent teams to compete in South Africa, despite the non-approval of the Namibia School Sport Union.
Five of the six school netball teams from the Khomas Region departed to South Africa over the weekend.
The under-12, -13, -14, -15 and -16 teams were invited to participate in the All Ages tournament in Boksburg from 26 to 28 June.
The Khomas under-17 team will be participating in a junior tournament in Cape Town from 9 to 14 July. These are regional tournaments and are annual highlights on the South African school netball calendar.
However, the Khomas netball committee received a letter from the Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) in March, stating that no national trials would be held and that no netball teams would be participating internationally this year.
'Unfair decision'
“For us as a committee, which currently has 99 high school teams and 164 primary school teams participating in the first league as well as 24 teams in the super league, this was an unfair decision and we decided that we must try and create alternative opportunities for the girls of the region.
“The Khomas netball committee saw participation in the All Ages as an opportunity not to be missed and obtained the necessary permission from Netball Namibia,” organisers said in a statement.
“We started arrangements with a parents meeting and all were immediately on board. We want to specifically thank the parents of these 60 girls who realised the importance of this type of exposure and who took our hands in making this a reality.
“As you can imagine, such a tour has huge financial implications for all involved. The costs amount to N$285 000 and we as a committee would not be able to pull this off without our generous sponsors.
“We want to thank each and everyone, no matter how small the contribution was. Thank you to the schools who supported their learners financially and to those individuals who sponsored a team-mate," the statement continued.
“Thank you to all businesses and individuals who sponsored clothes, backpacks, etc. Thank you, parents, for an open hand in helping some less-fortunate players by supplying sport shoes, extra clothing and toiletries. We appreciate your commitment to the development of netball in the region. You are making a difference in the lives of these girls."
