Breakthrough first title for Steenkamp
Christo "Kat" Steenkamp won the Namibian singles title for the first time as the Namibian Bowling Association concluded its week-long national championship on Saturday.
Steenkamp, a former rugby player for United who played one test match at centre against Uganda in 2007, represented this year’s host club, TransNamib. He beat André Campbell from Swakopmund in a tightly-contested final, who had eliminated him in the semi-final last year.
Marietjie van der Bergh, also playing for TransNamib, advanced to another national women’s singles title when she beat Amy Human of Eros Bowling Club in the final.
Van der Bergh, a veteran at international level, said she has been impressed with the general standard of players in the competition this year.
Steenkamp was awarded the prize as the men’s player of the tournament, while the young Hailey van Wyk received the women’s player of the tournament award.
