Consistent Wilna wins Ladies Coastal Open
Golf
A poor first-round score cost Wilmari Woest her chance to challenge for the top spot.
The 2025 Hollard Ladies Coastal Open golf championship was held at the Rössmund Golf Course at Swakopmund last Saturday and Sunday for the 19th year in succession.
Playing conditions on both days turned out to be hot and humid, with a slight breeze towards midday. A field of 27 players from Omeya, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay, and Rössmund entered the tournament, including a couple of new faces.
As an official event on the calendar of the Namibia Amateur Ladies Golf Union (NALGU), there was the added incentive of merit points on offer and therefore the ladies were determined to play their best golf.
The old “Lister engine” of Henties Bay Golf Club, Wilna Bredenhann, was once again firing on all cylinders, shooting a repeat of her 2024 first-round score, 84 gross, finishing seven shots ahead of nearest rival Doulaine Holtzhausen (Omeya, 91 gross).
Brenda Lens was the leader in the B Division on 97 gross, two shots ahead of Evelyn Paulino, whilst Katarina Gallas took charge of the C Division (stableford) on 32 points
On Sunday Wilna continued playing some consistent golf, coming home with an 84 gross. Doulaine could only shoot a 97 gross and although Wilmari Woest produced the best Sunday round (83 gross), her Saturday score of 98 let her down somewhat.
The golfers were presented with beautiful goodie bags on registration – distributed by Bernard Louw as sponsors representative. Sunday was back to normal with Diffie Nel and Berndine Coetzee out on the course to provide the players with a much-needed drink and an extra treat on hole 12.
In true Hollard fashion the players were spoilt with lots of surprises both on and off the course including a beautiful selection of prizes – once again displaying that this tournament should not be missed and remains a true highlight on the NALGU calendar.
A wonderful weekend of golf was had by all and as always the organisers put out a big word of thanks to the Hollard team who made this event something special. Players always enjoy the camaraderie and are looking forward to the 20-year celebration in 2026.
Logistics and branding were catered for by DZ Golf, the one-stop golfing expert.
A prize for the Most Golf was awarded to new golfer Jackie de Jager, who showed some perseverance.
