Field archery nationals in full swing

Ingrid Booysen
This past weekend, 10 archers competed in various divisions in the Namibian field archery nationals, which were held at the WFAC range at Heja Lodge.

The two-day tournament began on Saturday with the field and animal round. On Sunday, the archers competed in the hunter round, which was followed by an award ceremony.

For both the field and animal rounds, participants fired at 28 targets at various ranges. To choose the winner, the total points from the field and hunter rounds were combined.

Get involved

In archery, arrows are fired from a bow at a fixed target. On the circular disk used as the target, there are 10 concentric circles that stand for various tracts. The area of the circle that the arrow strikes determines the scores. To shoot an arrow at the target is the goal.

Even though archery may not be a popular sport in Namibia, it has made significant progress in recent years.

“Archery is definitely for all. But if you would like to get involved or try it out, you can always contact me on 081 205 3715,” Jaqueline Coetzee, the vice-president for target archery at the Archery Association of Namibia, said. She is also a coach for young archers and para archers.

Upcoming events

The African region field archery champs will be taking place at the same venue on 29 June to 2 July. Seventy entries have already been submitted from South Africa, Zambia and Namibia. The organisers will provide a single 28-target range, while the range overlay and targets will be inspected and certified by an accredited official on each day of the competition.

Rene Rosler, who was in attendance over the weekend, expressed his delight at the pleasant weather. He added that he is excited to see fresh faces join the team, and gladly welcomes everyone to attend and enjoy these events in future.
