NSSU hockey league semi-finals conclude
The Namibian Schools Sport Union (NSSU) hockey league semi-finals took place over the weekend at Affies Park in Windhoek. Some teams along with their leaders travelled from the Erongo and Hardap regions to compete in the competition.
Hockey teams from St George’s Diocesan School, St Paul’s College, Windhoek Afrikaans Private School (WAP), Windhoek Gymnasium, Pro-Ed Akademie, Elnatan Private School, Private School Swakopmund (PSS), Walvis Bay Private High School (WBPHS) and Windhoek High School (WHS) took part, with matches played in three regions.
In Khomas, 20 teams participated with 62 matches played, while Erongo hosted 10 teams and 22 matches. In Hardap, one boys team and one girls team played four matches.
Team spirit
On Friday, Elnatan girls' first team made their mark on the league, winning 3-0 against the Windhoek Gymnasium A team. After securing their spot in the finals set to be played next week, coach Yanka Agenbach said winning the match is a great achievement for the school and allows other learners to see hockey differently.
“This is the only team we have currently. This has definitely been a great journey, being such a small group and coming this far. I am grateful for the team spirit we have, because hockey is always deemed a little lower than other sport codes.
"This win changes how other learners view the sport and we definitely are the favourites right now,” she said.
14-0 thrashing
The last match for boys hockey on Saturday left jaws on the floor after Windhoek Gymnasium defeated WBPHS 14 – 0. Prior to the match, WBPHS head coach Gerrit Griffiths acknowledged that their opponents are fast and very skilled. “Playing against Windhoek Gymnasium today, we will use a defensive approach. We are very excited and we will do our best,” he said.
Withstanding the heat on both days, spectators came out to support the teams playing. Friends and family members gathered around the hockey field to watch the games.
Attending the competition, Adrian Coetzee said he did not expect the heat to be as bad as “winter just ended and the heat is here, but so is the heat brought by the hockey teams competing in this league".
"I am enjoying the games with my friends. I want to see who makes it to the finals,” he said.
The league concludes today after having eight matches played over the weekend. One match will be played later this afternoon, with St Paul’s College going up against WAP at 18:00.
