The Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) has announced the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the esteemed Doc Tournament, a pivotal milestone in the annals of the sport. The event is scheduled to be held at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund from 30 to 31 March.
Named in tribute to Dr Juergen Munz, a distinguished dentist and trailblazer in Namibian volleyball during the early 70s and 80s, the tournament has garnered significance as a historical cornerstone.
The NVF expresses gratitude to Bank Windhoek, the principal sponsor for the past nine years, and various sponsors such as SWAC & Foods, Venus Enterprises, Solar Age, John Savva, OTB Sports, Calvary Technologies, the Namibian Marshall Ranger, Light System Namibia and the MTC Dome, among others, for their enduring support over the years.
Open competition
Originated in 1983 under the erstwhile South West Africa Volleyball Association (SWAVA), the Doc Tournament remains an open competition, allowing any team to register. Of note, only DTS and Revivals Volleyball clubs have sustained active participation since the 1980s.
The tournament underscores the NVF’s steadfast commitment to advancing volleyball excellence in Namibia.
Over four decades, it has served as a stage for showcasing the prowess and dedication of Namibian players, fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship.
The 40th anniversary edition promises to be a landmark event, featuring teams of both genders from across Namibia in a series of matches culminating in two epic finals.
NVF President Hillary Dux Imbuwa expressed excitement: “We are thrilled to celebrate this significant milestone in the history of Namibian volleyball. The Doc tournament has been instrumental in shaping the volleyball landscape in Namibia, and we look forward to continuing its legacy for many years to come.”
While past editions welcomed some international teams, logistical concerns have led to the absence of foreign teams this year. The NVF is optimistic about resuming international participation in the next edition, pending favourable conditions.
Team registration
The 40th anniversary celebration, originally due in 2023, was rescheduled to 2024 due to the Covid-19 pandemic causing the cancellation of the 2020 tournament.
The NVF extends an invitation to all volleyball enthusiasts and supporters to join in commemorating the momentous occasion.
