Organisers of the Okapya annual tournament which took place during the festive season say they have been motivated to host more tournaments of such nature due to the support they got in the previous one.

The tournament which was launched for the first time in 2019 is said to have elevated it to a full proper tourney.

One of the organisers Sandro Ithana said that they have been pleased with the response from the community and will therefore plan to continue with the tournament in 2025.

“I must say that we have been motivated by the support we received in December and that is why we can just look forward to hosting the tournament again this year.

“We would like to thank everyone that contributed towards the success of the tourney,” Ithana said.

The youth soccer event was won by Tse Ya Kuku FC after they defeated Omandindi Fc 1-0 in the final. It was the third consecutive time Tse Ya Kuku FC were crowned champions of the event, winning N$20 000 this time around.

The team also received 18 gold medals and a brand-new football kit for their success, while runners-up, Omandindi FC took home N$10 000 and 18 silver medals plus a football kit.

Family FC scooped 18 bronze medals and a cash prize of N$2500, while Casablanca received N$2500 for their fourth place finish.

“We had 17 exhibitors overall, and we estimated that 10,000 people attended this year’s tournament.

“The rain was one of the tournament's biggest challenges, forcing us to move to a new location on the second-last day of the competition.”

The tournament serves as a platform for teams to scout for players in order to strengthen their squad or team, and it aims to keep young people occupied and united during the festive season.

The tournament was sponsored by: Okapya Liner Transport (Main Sponsor), Onamulunga Service Station, Coca Cola, Nampower, Sunsation Juice, Bonaqua and Alv Consulting Engineers, Atai Investment CC, NBC, Piyet Service, Predator Energy Drink, Energy 100 FM, Shipi FM, FI Electrical & Construction, Good One Media, Shili Ambulance and Kashipu Investment CC.
