Three of the country’s young chess talents are competing in the 2024 World Cadet Chess Championships in Montesilvano, Italy, until 27 November.
The trio, sent by the Namibia Chess Federation (NCF), comprises
• Frederick Cronje from Windhoek Afrikaans Private School, boys’ under-8 category;
• Shadah Uanguta from Windhoek Central Primary School, girls’ under-10;
• James Diën from Windhoek Gymnasium, boys’ under-10.
The players are guided by the NCF’s secretary-general, Lloyd Diën.
Diën noted that the event gathers the world’s top young players, providing a platform for the next generation of chess masters to showcase their skills.
Full of potential
Reflecting on the players’ skill levels and potential, Diën said: “Frederick is one of the youngest in the competition, but carries a remarkable passion for the game. His eagerness and adaptability make him a dangerous competitor to look forward to.
“Shadah, mature beyond her age, brings a sharp strategic mind and competitive spirit, aiming to make her mark on the international stage.
“James’ consistent performances have earned him recognition as one of Namibia’s promising chess talents.”
The trio’s participation is a crucial milestone, reflecting the country’s growing presence in the global chess community.
According to Diën, the players’ dedication and determination position them to achieve personal milestones and inspire fellow chess enthusiasts back home.
“NCF and its supporters across the country are rallying behind our three players as they take on the world’s best youngsters. Their journey in Italy promises to be an exciting chapter for the country’s chess community,” Diën said.
