Steenbokkies, Gemsbokkies hard to catch
Women's rugby
Two more lopsided results were seen on Saturday.
Huge wins for Unam Steenbokkies and United Gemsbokkies emphasised the differences in strength between the leading teams and the rest in the NRU Women’s 15 league.
Unam stormed to ten tries without reply in their 66-3 domination against Wanderers. Rather than the usual occurrence of the fleet-footed sprinters Fiola Vliete (fullback) and Ivone Kooper (scumhalf) scoring multiple tries, they each only scored once in the all-round Unam performance at Wanderers field.
Unam’s other try scorers that ensured the maximum log points were wing Helena Shuumbwa (2), centres Ellen Garoes and Elzane-Lee Basson, number 8 Mandy Hansen, flank Emilyn Marias and hooker Kaylin Basson. Seven of flyhalf Michelle Slinger’s conversions sailed through.
Wanderers could only reply with a penalty by replacement prop Nekesha Armstrong.
• Grootfontein’s women’s team were on the wrong end of another 70-7 drubbing by United in Olympia.
United ran in 12 tries – four of which were scored by scrumhalf Mbitjita Matuzee. Fullback Roberta Fabio (2), wing Selma Paulus, centres Tishina Basson and Marney Tjauha, flyhalf Ivandre Rittmann and replacements Richardine Gaya and Vasti Gaya.
For Grootfontein, flyhalf Amor Pollman scored a try and converted it.
• Title holders Unam Steenbokkies maintains the only unbeaten record in the league of six teams. They lead with 36 log points from six matches, having racked up 60 tries and only conceding two on their way to a positive points difference of 368.
United Gemsbokkies (33) are also on course for the playoffs, while Rehoboth (15), Wanderers (11), Grootfontein (0) and Oceans (0) have struggled for consistency.
Grootfontein have conceded 345 points in five matches (average 69) including a total of 31 tries.
