Top seeds end up winning NTA tournament

The Namibia Tennis Association (NTA) fourth senior tournament of the year concluded yesterday at Central Tennis Club in Olympia.

The competition saw women’s and men’s doubles and singles contests over three days. Jandre Bezuidenhout, the tournament director said: “Our tennis athletes are fighting for national ranking points where they are ranked according to the number of matches played and wins obtained. Winners and runners-up also get prize money.”

Women’s division

In the women’s doubles final on Saturday, Joanivia Bezuidenhout and Mari van Schalkwyk went up again Leandre Louw and Minenhle Moyo. Bezuidenhout and Van Schalkwyk won 7-5, 6-0.

The women’s singles were played in a round-robin format where teenager Joanivia Bezuidenhout won all her matches, claiming the womens’ title on Saturday and confirming her top-seed status.

Men’s division

The first men’s singles semi-final saw top seeded Kendall Swartz contest against Elias Shikongo (seeded third) on Saturday. Swartz secured his place in the Sunday finals with a 6-3, 7-5 win.

In the second semi-final, Oscar Muyambo battled it out before coming out on top 6-4, 6-4 over the second seeded Arinze Okafor.

The men’s singles final was an intense tactical battle between Swartz and Muyambo where Swartz won 6-3, 7-6 and 7-4 in the tie-break and claimed the men’s title.

• The first doubles semi-final was contested between Mickey Alemu and his partner SP van Wyk facing Nqobilizwe Moyo and Arinze Okafor on Saturday. Alume and Van Wyk progressed as the winners with 6-4, 5-7 and 1-6.

The second semi-final saw Oscar Muyambo and Kendall Swartz eliminating Dickson Phiri and his partner Elias Shikongo by 7-6(3), 6-2.
