Tromp inspires Affies to convincing win

PSG Pro-Ed Academy has forced the opposition to take notice as they moved into the top three on the log.
The Standard Bank Namibia Secondary Schools Rugby (NSSR) Under 19 Super League is on course for another cliff-hanger season as all teams have now passed the halfway mark of the single-round competition.

The hosts found the going tough initially, only breaking the deadlock after 27 minutes when fly-half Van der Merwe Tromp sent up a pin-point cross-kick for left wing Etienne Lombaard to score the first try of the match.
Affies scrum-half Liam van Rooyen broke through for an easy try to increase the lead to 14-0. Before the end of the first half Moria pulled one back as left wing Uaarakapo Kuhanga rounded off in the corner, to make the half-time score 14-7.
Moria restarted strongly, as they scored first through a try by captain and nr. 8 Kevin Germishuys off a lineout to level things at 14-14.
Tromp however couldn’t be stopped as he added a drop goal, before showing his prowess on the attack. Full-back Laz-Will Williams sent Tromp through a gap with a short pass, running from the halfway line and beating a number of defender to set up a spectacular try for Williams.
Replacement hooker Delano van der Berg added Affies’ last try off the final lineout, with Tromp finishing with 14 kicking points.
Ben Burger, the big nr. 8 who captained Affies, said: “It was really a tough game, we pushed through and I’m happy we got the win. Tromp played another fantastic game today. We know what he’s capable of and we’re happy to have him in our team.”
Log leaders Gymnasium
Schoemans Group Windhoek Gymnasium grabbed maximum points as they beat Compack Tsumeb Gymnasium 43-5 in the northern town.
The winners welcomed back fly-half JW Visagie, sent on off the bench for the second half after returning from Namibia’s successful tour to Tanzania in qualification for the 2024 U19 Cricket World Cup.
Full-back Janré van Zyl scored four tries for Gymnasium, all in the second half, along with tries by nr. 8 Ruan Agenbag and centre Suramie Kambombo. Scrum-half Denver Beukes opened with a penalty and a conversion and Waldré Kotze (starting at 10 and later moved to centre) kicked three conversions from the touchline.
Pro-Ed wins coastal derby
Swakopmund hosts PSG Pro-Ed got the better of coastal rivals PSG Walvis Bay Private School, winning the game 24-5.
Pro-Ed’s captain, outside centre Tayton Saunders, excelled with a hattrick of tries. Scrum-half Waldo Human scored another try, while Maughan Jarman (fly-half) landed two conversions.
Pro-Ed coach Thys Saunders says: “It was hard and Walvis Bay came at us with everything they had. They push us back in the scrums initially. They have a good side who will bounce back in their remaining matches.
“My team played really good rugby with ball in hand. We have a few small improvements to work on and I think the bodies will need some recovery this week.
“Our defence has been outstanding – only conceding five points in our last three home matches (keeping Tsumeb Gymnasium and Moria scoreless). We have three difficult matches left and we’ll have to focus on them one at a time.”
