Michael Tune Senior (Snr) and Michael Tune Junior (Jnr) both emerged victorious at the 2024 Nedbank Desert Classic golf tournament, also known as Namibia's Major, held at the Rössmund Golf Course in Swakopmund on 28 and 29 December.
The father-and-son pair delivered a stellar performance, scoring 46 points in the opening round and 48 points in the final round, securing the top spot with an overall score of 94 points.
They narrowly edged out another father-and-son duo, Fritz Coetzee Jnr and Fritz Coetzee Snr, who finished with 93 points after rounds of 45 and 48.
John Emuno and Gabriel Andreas claimed third place, also finishing with 93 points but losing out on a count-out.
Looking back on their victory, Tune Snr expressed his joy and gratitude to the organisers and sponsors.
“I have played in this tournament for the past 10 years with different partners. I only teamed up with my son last year, and we finished sixth. To win this year against such strong competition makes this victory even sweeter,” he said.
He revealed that their comeback in the second round was crucial after trailing the leaders by four points on the first day.
“At the 18th hole, I told my son we were probably in the top four, but he was confident we had won. When the results were announced, I realised he was right,” Tune Snr added.
Tournament coordinator Dan Zwiebel from DZ Golf praised the event's success. “Once again, we witnessed a fantastic tournament.
We are grateful to Nedbank Namibia and Hollard for their support and to the players for their commitment during the festive season,” he said.
Nedbank Namibia's Executive Head of Marketing and Communications, Gernot de Klerk, reaffirmed the bank's dedication to supporting golf in Namibia. “Nedbank aims to remain golf's greatest partner in Namibia. Congratulations to all the winners and participants,” he stated.
The tournament, featuring 72 teams (144 players), followed the Better Ball Stableford with a scramble drive format, ensuring exciting and competitive play.
Sponsored by Nedbank Namibia and Hollard, the Desert Classic continues to cement its status as Namibia's premier amateur golf event, drawing top players and producing memorable moments year after year.
