Unam Steenbokkies thrash opponents
The Unam Steenbokkies show no sign of slowing down in the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) Women's Fifteens League as they put the inexperienced Grootfontein Bokkies to the sword in a 117-0 thrashing on Saturday.
After recording a home win against Kudu Bokkies the previous weekend, Steenbokkies were faced with a new challenge as they travelled up north to take on Grootfontein Bokkies, a team full of newcomers who are eager to play rugby.
By half-time (56-0), the despondent Grootfontein girls had already given up any resistance in defence, as the skill of Unam had simply left them flat-footed.
No defence
Ivonne Kooper at scrumhalf, with a hat-trick of tries, cut the defence to pieces at will with her speed and sidestepping.
Steenbokkies fullback Fiola Vliete – also a star footballer and top goalscorer in the FNB Women's Super League, with 34-plus goals for Beauties FC – was on top of her game as she scored four tries. Twelve successful conversions brought her individual tally to 44 points for the day.
Steenbokkies scored 17 tries in total, with centre Ellen Garoes rounding off three tries for her team. Team captain and hooker Elzane-Lee Basson also scored two well-worked tries as the Steenbokkies kept another clean sheet.
"I'm happy with the team's performance, we enjoyed ourselves on the pitch. We are eager to play and look forward to the next game," Basson said after the massive win.
With the Grootfontein Bokkies happy to hear the final whistle about five minutes prematurely, the Unam Steenbokkies remain on top of the NRU Women's Fifteens League.
• In another mismatch at Swakopmund, Trustco United raced to a 71-0 win against hosts Oceans, scoring 11 tries without reply.
