The Momentum Junior Golf Series’ seventh round reached its pinnacle at the Windhoek Country Club on Monday, with Francois van Zyl emerging as the overall champion.

The open competition, organised by Damian Sports Academy in collaboration with the Namibia Junior Golf Foundation, attracted 37 young golfers across Windhoek, demonstrating remarkable skill and precision as they vied for top honours.

The competition saw standout performances across several divisions.

In the B Division, Regardt Kruger emerged as the winner, with Declan Renton claiming the C Division top spot. Matthew Garrels took home the honours in the D Division.

Non-handicap winners

The Non-handicap Division, which included golfers of various age groups, saw standout performances from Jurie Brandt dominating the 16 to 18 years category and Nkoseienhle Mhlanga emerging victorious in the 14 to 15 years category.

Daniel Muller was the top-performing boy in the 11 to 13 years category, while Zahnri Delport shone as the leading girl.

The younger divisions were equally exciting, with Armand Nederlof and Mikaela Eiseb (8 to 10 years) winning the boys' and girls' titles, respectively.

In the 6 to 7 years category, Mycen Basson took first place among the boys, while Manoela Gustavo claimed the top spot among the girls.

‘Phenomenal turnout’

Event organiser Damian da Silva expressed satisfaction with the success of the junior golf series, indicating that despite challenges posed by exam schedules, they had a great turnout that surpassed last year’s participation.

“The academy and its sponsor Momentum Namibia initially targeted the overall participation of 60 junior golfers throughout the series this year. After this competition with one more event to go on 25 November, we managed to get 61 junior golfers on board. It’s phenomenal!” he noted.

Da Silva further emphasised the importance of junior development throughout the country, especially in Windhoek, where similar tournaments have shown a recent decline. “The series has become the highlight of junior golf and children are enthusiastic about participating.”

Plans to expand golf series

Looking ahead, the golf academy plans to expand the series to different regions nationwide, bringing the competition to more towns and encouraging wider participation.

“This is the golf series’ second year, and it’s the start of something big!”

Empathising the event’s inclusivity, Da Silva indicated that the academy welcomes the participation of all junior golfers, whether they have a handicap or not.

“We welcome everyone who would like to try out the sport. They just need to have played a bit of golf, at least, to have a better understanding of the rules,” Da Silva noted.

He said the series offers divisions for high school and primary school players, including non-handicap categories. Players do not need an entry fee to sign up for the competition and receive a welcome gift from Momentum.
