The first-ever MTC national volleyball league ended in stunning fashion at Swakopmund’s MTC Dome last weekend.

The Namibia Correctional Service (NCS) men’s team, all the way from Ondangwa, took home the league championship trophy in the male category.

Revivals Volleyball Club from Windhoek reached the pinnacle in the female category.

NCS Ondangwa had to endure until the last match of the season on Saturday to wrestle the championship away from Namibia Defence Force (NDF) Raptors, who had been the log leaders all season long since the league kicked off in May.

The inaugural MTC national volleyball league is sponsored with investment of N$1 million per year by MTC as part of a three-year commitment effective from 2024 to 2027.

Eden Tobias Mwatelulo, the recently appointed president of the National Volleyball Federation, said: “The MTC Volleyball National League stands as a pinnacle of excellence in Namibian volleyball, bringing together the finest talents from across the nation to compete in a spirited display of athleticism and sportsmanship.

“With eight male and eight female teams representing the various regions, this league showcased the diversity and vibrancy of Namibian volleyball.”

Mwatelulo further revealed that since the launch in May, the league traversed through many towns, including Katima Mulilo, Rundu, Ondangwa, Otjiwarongo, Windhoek and Mariental before culminating in the Swakopmund finale.

In remarks delivered on his behalf, MTC’s chief of human capital, Tim Ekandjo, commended the leadership of the MTC Volleyball league for the invaluable work to ensure that the league went smoothly since receiving the sponsorship.

“We recognize and commend the work done by the NVF leadership to get us here, today.

“Additionally, I want to remind the leadership and the players how this sponsorship came about.

“It was because of the sheer commitment and passion displayed by the players for the love of volleyball.

“This is the same passion that we want to see when the new season league season commences, the fire must continue to burn to continue bringing the very best of Namibian volleyball.”

For their league-winning achievement, Revivals Volleyball Club and NCS Ondangwa each scooped medals and N$40 000.

Second-placed Kudos and NDF Raptors each scored N$20 000, while Khomas Nampol Club’s men’s and women’s teams each got N$15 000 for their bronze positions.
