Training paid off as wrestlers impressed at the Windhoek Wrestling Club open championship over the weekend.
The Windhoek Wrestling Club open championship attracted wrestlers to the SKW big hall in Kleine Kuppe.
With over 70 wrestlers from various cubs taking part in the tournament, Colin Steytler - wrestling secretary and referee - said: “We’ve seen some good wrestling matches today".
"We had about 100 matches today so we are very excited," he added.
Steytler also spoke on the Namibia senior wrestling team that departed to Hammamet in Tunisia for the African championships, which will be taking place from 15 to 21 May.
"We have a very good team this year with good wrestlers and I am confident that they will come back with medals.”
After School Katutura Wrestling Club was the overall winner of the tournament, with Windhoek Wrestling Club taking second place and Swakopmund Wrestling Club coming in third.
Devin Shafaihuunay, a wrestler and coach from After School Katutura, said: “We lost a few matches, which is all part of the process, but other than that, the wrestlers did very well. I am happy that training paid off because they executed everything very well".
Under-11 wrestler Laura Theron was named the best wrestler of the tournament as she displayed fantastic skill and won all three of her matches.
“I really enjoy wrestling. It's a fun sport for me and I’m very happy that I won today.”
