Dual-town hockey league kicks off
The Namibian Hockey Union (NHU) kicked off its dual-town annual Indoor Hockey League on Friday at the Windhoek Showgrounds and The Dome in Swakopmund.
The event will be running concurrently in the capital city and the seaside town, with over 10 teams participating in the club league competition. The hockey league consists of players ranging in age from 13 to 20.
Ecstatic Saints club midfielder Alice Meyer expressed her gratitude for the continued sponsorship of the tournament and said she hopes to play competitively with a fuller bench. Similar sentiments of excitement for game time were shared by Christo Derahn, the coach of the Saints premier team, right before their game against the School of Excellence team.
“Without key sponsors like Bank Windhoek, we can’t see our players with the ball. I’m thankful to them,” he said.
The dual-town initiative is just the beginning of the NHU’s hopes to expand such tournaments, added event organiser Maryke Short.
“We hope to expand to the north and the south as well. We want to have training in other regions so that we can have such tournaments there,” she said.
