Gilchrist and Klosta on top of the log
The first leg of the National Motocross Championships at Gallina Park north of the capital delivered the usual thrills and action in all eight classes as promised.
The talented De Wet du Plessis scooped the overall first place in the MX5 class (50cc) for beginners while Carla Brand came in second with Delmar du Plessis third.
In the MX65 class (65cc) Khian Kotze (first) beat Jan Willem Bronkhorst (second) and Leander Metzger’s (third) by winning all three heats.
MX85 (85cc): 1 Wynand Cronjé established dominance by winning two of the three heats while Luca Brand came second in heat two and won heat one. Third-placed 2021 defending champion Juan de Vos had a bad fall in heat one, ended fourth in heat two and managed to clinch third place in heat three.
MX125 (125cc): The twins Anton and Gerhard Myburgh ended first and third respectively, with Bjorn Kebbel second. Anton won heat one, came second in heat two and first in three. Dylan Hilfiker won heat two but could not finish heat three.
In the Open Class Liam Gilchrist proved why he is the defending 2021 champion. Gilchrist won all three heats while second-placed Quinton van Rooyen came second in all three. Third-placed Herbert de Klerk was third in heat one, fourth in two with while Don-Ray Botha (third) pipped him this time. In heat three, Botha and De Klerk changed places for his final result.
The Clubman's class was dominated by Jorn Greiter (first), Tertius Joubert (second) and Francois Cronjé (third). JF van Eeden and Lourens du Plessis ended the day in fourth and fifth place.
Frank Klosta, Quinton van Rooyen and Rudi Brand took the overall honours in the Veterans Class. Klosta was also crown as King of the Dirt over Gilchrist and Van Rooyen.
In the women’s division (WMX) Geena Sadlowski took first place with Zoe-Lee Waldschmidt second and Yoaline Fourie third.
