Gravel and Dirt dedicated to Mans
Mans Junior and Liebenberg dominate
Gerhard Mans junior and Courtney Liebenberg were in a class of their own at the Hollard Gravel and Dirt Eagle Ride and Run that took place at the Otjiwa Safari lodge over the weekend.
The 10th edition of the Hollard Gravel and Dirt took place on Saturday, and was dedicated to the late Gerhard Mans.
Mans, who participated in the race from 2010 until 2021 and won first place on four occasions, was celebrated by the cycling fraternity.
Owner of Otjiwa Safari Lodge, WP Bernard, said: “It’s a very sad day because I’ve known Gerhard ever since we were grade two. He’s the only person who has been at every Otjiwa race, and this one is dedicated to him”.
Mans died in a car accident earlier this month.
Making him proud
After a moment of silence, the races kicked off at 09:00, with Gerhard Mans junior taking the lead in the 80 km men’s race. He won in a time of 02:24:07. After the race, he said: “This is my first Otjiwa race without my father; we always raced together and it’s special to win in honour of him”.
Ingram Cuff came in second place in a time of 02:24:32, while Brandon Plaatjies took third in 02:26:23.
In the women’s 80 km, race Courtney Liebenberg took first place in 02:43:13, with Anri Krugel not far behind in 02:43:43. Jeanne Heunis took third place in 02:44:43.
In the 40 km men’s category, Marco Augustyn was crowned victorious in 01:18:48, while Roger Suren came in second and Justus Beulker in third.
In the 40 km women’s category, Ada Kahl set a gap between her and the rest of the group, winning first place in 01:22:55. Delsia Jansen van Vuuren (01:26:47) took the second spot, while Rosemarie Thiel came in third.
With the next event set to take place on 4 June, at Wilhelmstal Okajo Lodge, there’s a lot to look forward to.
