Mboma, Masilingi fever coming on
With the new athletics season about to kick off, I’m starting to get goosebumps as I imagine the exciting ride we are going to be on.
Of course, when I speak about the new season, it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that we will have sprint queens Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi in mind.
Last year was really incredible for the young athletes as the world got a glimpse of what they can do on the track. I know they were busy training and spending time with family and friends and just dusted themselves off when they competed early this month in Bloemfontein, with Mboma scorching to an easy 100-metre win.
The 18-year-old, running in only her second ever 100 m, set the second fastest time this season of 11.15 seconds at South Africa's first big athletics meet of the 2022 outdoor season.
That was a true taste of who Mboma is and what she can do when given the chance, with Masilingi having taken the second spot in Bloemfontein.
But the big names in the athletics circle were not there. This means the two Namibians have a big task of proving themselves against these senior athletes once again.
When big events such as the Diamond League open up, it will be a great opportunity to see how much the two have grown in confidence. I know Mboma is pretty shy off track, but boy, she can explode on the track. Masilingi, on the other hand, is a bit of an extrovert and that balances the duo out a bit.
This time around, Mboma has been receiving a lot of coaching when it comes to her start. We saw how she ran in Bloemfontein. If that can get better in the 200 m, there will be no stopping the Namibian queen on sprint.
But of course, the other big stars are also working hard and now know that they will be competing against a serious speedometer.
I think my wish for Mboma and Masilingi this year is that they just keep their consistency and that despite the ‘holiday’ season being over for them, that they don’t forget to have fun when they travel and when they compete.
If they run for themselves, I know they will continue to reach new heights. Like I always tell them, run like nobody’s business and the rest will follow.
