Sportsmanship and competitiveness were the order of the day as the Namibian under-14 national tennis championships took place at the Central Tennis Club in Olympia, Windhoek, over the weekend.
“The competition was tough but very good, and I’m excited to play in the finals,” 11-year-old Minenhle Moyo said.
When the finals will take place has yet to be confirmed, but other young players like Lian Kuhn and Edina Schollij, who also made it to the last leg, said tennis is exciting, adding that they hope to excel at such tournaments to create a better future for themselves in their tennis careers.
Known as the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior under-14 tournament, the competition prepares players for the ITF African Championships that will take place later in the year, said competition director Ndumiso Moyo.
Namibia is allowed to host one under-14 national championships tournament, from which the winner will be sent to the Confederation of Africa Tennis (CAT), and the first eight positions from the tournament will earn CAT ranking points, allowing the young athletes to create a name for themselves in the sport.
