We need more funding – Kashongo
Regions need support
The secretary-general of the NBF, Petrus Kashongo, said at times, they have to take money from their own pockets to assist boxers because a lack of funding.
The Namibia Boxing Federation’s (NBF) Petrus Kashongo said they need more funding to assist amateur boxers locally.
Kashongo was a guest on the Sport Wrap show on 22 February. He spoke about their role as a federation and explained that their task is to coordinate, promote and develop amateur boxing and to assist the regions, but added that they "really struggle with sponsorship in order to assist regions with equipment".
“We are standing on our own, we are trying to get sponsorship but it’s very difficult.”
He said when he was a boxer, the federation had money. But things have since changed.
From our own pockets
"Since 2016, we haven’t been getting funding. We are using money from our own pockets to help boxers.
"There is so much talent in Namibia. We have great administrators and management teams as well. The Namibia Sports Commission assists with funds when the teams are travelling out of the country with international events, but that’s about it,” he said.
He added that in Namibia people only associate with you once you win something after many struggles.
Kashongo, however, assured that a lack of funding will not deter them from their purpose. “Aspiring boxers can get hold of boxing clubs in their regions and sign up. We are here to assist and to ensure that the legacy and history Namibia has created in the boxing industry continues,” he said.
