Camp Rooiklip an environmentally conscious paradise

Ellanie Smit
Camp Rooiklip can be found southwest of the capital of Windhoek on a farm close to the beautiful Gamsberg Pass, with a focus on to be an environmentally conscious paradise where nature conservation and sustainability are key.

The property is only accessible on a 17 km long bumpy offroad track. In order to get there, a sturdy 4x4 is highly recommended.

It is situated on a farm measuring 7 050 hectares and is about 1 035 m above sea level at the foot of the Gamsberg mountain.

In addition to the 3 well known and popular campsites at “Felsen Camp”, “Camp Flintstone” has 2 small stone houses named “Wilma” and “Fred”, each with a large double bed and a single bed. The 3rd small stone house “Barney” has 4 single beds.

At the "Felsen Camp" the owners created three camping sites under 650 million year old rock roofs, installed showers in the rock, set up toilets with small hidden septic tanks and nicely laid out cooking and braai areas so that camping guests have everything they need in one place.

Groundwater is also pimped from a depth of 100 m and with the help of the sun and a solar water heater they are able to provide warm water for showers.

Meanwhile the self-catering “Camp Flintstone" is set up for guests who do not want to camp.

It originated from the research camp of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) where, until the drought, biologists researched flora and fauna on the edge of the oldest desert in the world.

When the drought started in 2019, the research camp was closed and expanded into Camp Flintstone.

“Here, too, our requirements were the same as for the "Felsen Camp", absolute preservation of nature and the valuable rock, said the owners, Hannelore Neuffer and Frans van Biljon. According to them the little stone houses were only built with stones from the area.

A small 12 volt photovoltaic system supplies the camp with electricity.

Guests can also enjoy the big pool at Rooiklip with a cool drink at the bar, relax in a special place and assimilate the striking nature of the Namib perimeter, the oldest desert on earth. Other activities include hiking trails, and mountain biking.
